The Alchemy of Water

New Year Retreat · Cartagena de Indias, Colombia

This January, the retreat Field moves somewhere new.

For the first time, we gather in South America, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in the ancient city of Cartagena de Indias, surrounded by water, held by the warmth of the tropics, and entering together the threshold of a new year.

For the past several years, our January retreat has taken place in Tiruvannamalai, beneath the great presence of Arunachala in South India.

There is enormous gratitude for everything that has been received there: for the land, for Arunachala, for India, for the extraordinary depth of the Field that has opened through those gatherings, for the elders and adepts of this ancient land, for the Tamil people, for the children, for the extraordinary community of souls who are naturally called to South India, and for all that has been shared, illumined and initiated there. Nothing of that is left behind. The relationship continues. The reverence continues. The Fire continues.

And now the movement of the dharma takes us somewhere new.

After these years of gathering beneath our beloved Arunachala, we cross into another continent and another element.

We move to Water.

Not because the Field depends upon geography or element. We bring the Field with us. Yet place participates. Nature participates. The earth beneath us, the atmosphere surrounding us, the history held within a landscape and the elements in which the nervous system rests all become part of the alchemical container.

South America is a new frontier for our retreat Field, a continent in which we have never gathered before. It carries ancient indigenous and shamanic lineages, a profound relationship with the living Earth, and dimensions of the Great Feminine that remain deeply woven into its cultural and energetic landscape.

And Colombia is where this next movement comes naturally to ground.

Close to North America, open to the Caribbean, deeply South American, extraordinarily alive, Colombia sits at a beautiful meeting place of worlds. On its northern coast, Cartagena rises from the water with its old stone walls, tropical light, history, sensuality, colour and unmistakable relationship with the sea.

Cartagena itself stands at a threshold.

Founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century on the Caribbean coast, the old walled city became one of the great gateways between worlds. Centuries later, we come not to repeat the consciousness through which the “New World” was once approached from outside, but to participate in another kind of frontier: the frontier of consciousness itself.

A new world does not begin when we discover another land.

It begins when we become capable of inhabiting the Earth plane differently.

How we inhabit our human body.

How we inhabit our emotional being.

How we inhabit our nervous system.

How we inhabit relationship, power, abundance and the unknown.

How we inhabit Life itself.

And this is the invitation of retreat.

For several days, we step out of the velocity of ordinary life and enter a living Field of Rest, Beauty, Grace, alchemy and initiation. There is nothing to prepare, nothing to study and nothing you are required to believe. Retreat is not a workshop and it is not conventional teaching. No one is coming to be taught or to accumulate more knowledge.

It is immersion.

A soaking in a Field alive with the Intelligence and Grace of the Creator.

The nervous system is given time to rest inside a frequency of coherence almost entirely absent from ordinary life. What has been carried unconsciously can become available to Light. What has become heavy can begin to fall away. What has become fragmented can return toward wholeness. And what has been waiting at the developmental edge of our consciousness can finally receive enough space, Grace and Fire to open.

Each retreat is collective, yet the process is exquisitely individual. Again and again, people leave with the strange and beautiful feeling that the retreat was created specifically for them: This was exactly for me. It felt as though you were speaking only to me.

This is part of the mystery of the Field.

The same gathering meets every being at a different frontier.

January gives this process a particular potency.

The beginning of a year offers a natural threshold: a moment to pause before momentum takes hold again. To rest deeply. To listen. To allow what is complete to complete. To allow what has become heavy to fall away. To feel what is now calling, and to align the whole being with the highest-frequency timeline available for the year ahead.

Not resolutions imposed upon the future.

Inspired alignment at the source from which the future will be created.

For several days, we allow the nervous system to soak in another atmosphere: Beauty, abundance, Love, play, music, connection, silence, Nature and Grace. We meet what is ready to be met, not through force, but within a Field sufficiently coherent to include it. We rediscover how to live at our developmental edge without pushing, how to remain open to the unknown without needing to control it, and how to become increasingly transparent to the Intelligence of Life itself, in the context of all that we are living and creating in our own lives.

And this year, Water surrounds the process.

Water does not need to force its way forward. It moves, receives and surrounds. It finds openings. It changes form without losing its essence. It can yield completely without becoming weak. It can be utterly still and immensely powerful.

After years of gathering in the frequency of Fire, we exuberantly choose to enter this next threshold held by Water: allowing the alchemy to become fluid, receptive, sensual, embodied and deeply rested, while the same Fire of illumination continues burning irresistibly within it.

Fire has not been left behind.

It enters Water.

And now something new becomes possible through their meeting.

This is not a retreat from Life.

It is an immersion more deeply into Life.

A chance to begin the year lighter, clearer, deeply rested, open and more whole. 

To meet inspired souls beyond the ordinary boundaries of age, profession and identity. To allow Beauty and Nature to nourish the body. To let the nervous system become familiar with another atmosphere. To become more available to Grace and revelation, and to the living Intelligence through which the year ahead can unfold.

Yet there is also a larger context for this gathering.

We are living through a radical moment on the Earth. Human beings are acquiring extraordinary new capacities. Technology and artificial intelligence are extending the reach of human power with astonishing speed. The structures through which civilization has organized itself are being stretched, challenged and transformed.

The deeper question is not simply what humanity will become capable of doing.

It is what kind of human being will receive these powers.

This is where the inner work of alchemy and the outer work of civilization cease to be separate.

The invitation is not simply to become more peaceful, more healed or more spiritually awake. It is to become increasingly capable of stewardship: capable of holding greater Love without grasping, greater abundance without possession, greater uncertainty without fear, greater intelligence without fragmentation, and greater power without distortion.

Not by learning principles of enlightened behavior and attempting to impose them upon ourselves through discipline.

By transforming the instrument itself.

As fear is illumined, less fear enters what we create. As fragmentation unwinds, greater complexity can be held without division. As identity loosens its grasp upon power, more power can move through a human life without becoming the possession of the one through whom it moves.

Starvation transmutes and alchemizes into emotional fullness.  The nervous system architecture of lack, fear, isolation and abandonment unwind into love and the feeling of being whole and fulfilled.

What we create from overflow and wholeness will nourish the world, and seed a new civilization.

This is divine stewardship.

And retreat is one crucible in which these capacities can be awakened, initiated and embodied.

Not the crucible. The new civilization belongs to no single teacher, community, tradition or movement. It will be anchored through innumerable beings and Fields across the Earth.

But we can participate consciously in its birth.

And there is something fitting about beginning the year in an ancient gateway to a world once called new.

Because the frontier before us now is not another territory.

It is another consciousness.

A consciousness more capable of inhabiting the body without abandoning it.

Of inhabiting relationship without losing sovereignty.

Of inhabiting abundance without grasping.

Of inhabiting power without possession.

Of inhabiting uncertainty without closing.

Of inhabiting this Earth with reverence.

Of inhabiting Life with enough openness that revelation, Beauty, Grace and the living Intelligence of the Field can continually enter.

So perhaps the deepest question with which to begin the year is not simply:

What do I want this year to bring me?

But:

What am I becoming capable of receiving, embodying and stewarding?

This is the frontier.

Not another world waiting somewhere beyond us.

A new way of inhabiting this one.

This January, we gather in Cartagena to enter that frontier together.
